[From the Editor]
Only one more issue of eNews left in 2009 - I hope this series has been of some help to you.

We are waiting for the autumn season to turn to winter, but it feels somewhat different this year. Since the first influenza A(H1N1) infection in Japan was confirmed in May, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has announced that the number of schools or grades that closed down during the week of October 18-24 alone climbed to 13,964. This is over three times more than the peak of closures last year, and the majority of them were caused by influenza A(H1N1).I have an active kindergartener, but he was also confined to bed with a fever and bad cough. It was frustrating that all I could really do was sit by and watch over him.
The kindergarten had an athletic meet in October. At lunch time I saw the children eat rice balls with a fork, and thought it strange at first, but soon realized that they had been taught not to use their hands as a precaution against virus contagion. The kindergarten closed down shortly afterward anyway, and the children are still required to wear face masks.
Influenza A(H1N1) is still a threat in many countries across the globe, but as the Japanese saying goes, “prevention is better than cure.” So wash your hands, gargle often, and get plenty of sleep.
